ETOLIKO

The municipality of Etoliko has its own unique beauty (in all of Greece). Etoliko “emerged” in the middle of the lagoon at the end of the millennium A.D to support and feed its inhabitants with the endowments from the lagoon. A small picturesque town fortified well in the swamp of the lagoon consists of one of the most important in our country.
Connected to land by two stone bridges 300m made in 1848. The major sights in the town are two historical churches. The assumption of Virgin Mary “Pazaritisas” metropolitan. And the temple of Archangel “Taxiarhis”.
In the church of Virgin Mary are kept relics which are priceless. Also the woodcut iconostasis sre from the 2nd half of the 18th century. The Virgin Mary icon and golden embroidered epitaph are maintained there. In this church during the Greek war of independence of 1821 is where a lot of meetings took place. This is also where the trial of Karaiskaki was held in 1824.
The temple of Archangel is very famous for its fretwork from the 18th century. On the west of the temple there is a historical well which by miracle quenched the thirst of all the people of Etoliko during the besiege of Turkey in 1823. Outside in the courtyard of the church is the grave of “Kira Vasiliki” (one of the mistresses whom Ali Pasa from Ioannina deeply loved).
Quaint old churches and small country churches quite historical on elevation in the sea e.g. (Panagia tis Finikias) where every year the people of Etoliko perform religious festivals for the saints, folk dancing takes place with the traditional music. The big festival of “Agia Agathi” is on the 23rd of August.
